Many men wear a suit on a daily basis. In the majority of western countries a suit is the excepted attire for formal occasions as well as business functions. Love it or hate it the suit is here to stay and performs a central role in the life of many men. It is interesting to note however how many men actually look good in a suit. The answer: not many. This is not due to their physical appearance but simply due to a lack of knowledge on how to wear a suit or a lack of effort. With a bit of direction and a bit of willing every man can look good in a suit and not just wear the suit but wear it well.
Size
This point may seem obvious but in it lays the downfall of many suit wearing men: it is essential to buy a suit that fits. This means spending time before buying the suit trying on different sizes to ensure the best fit. This investment of time is well worthwhile as it will make a huge difference in wearing a suit well. Moreover, not all body shapes are the same so it may be worth taking the suit, or any exclusive menswear for that matter, to a tailor to be adjusted exactly. If it is a viable option a tailor made suit will always look better than a shop bought suit.
Colour
Many men are attracted to the weird and wonderful variety of colours that suits are available in today. Do not be tempted. Choose a neutral colour. The shirt and tie give the suit wearer ample opportunity to play with colour and brighten things up. Doing this with the suit would be an unwise idea. Firstly, because brightly coloured suits simply do not look good. Secondly, because matching shirts and ties with a neutral coloured suit is simple, quick and easily. Matching shirts and ties with a brightly coloured suit however is a nightmare. So, when shopping for exclusive menswear choose a neutral colour or if that is a bit dull add pinstripes.
Quality
If a suit is required, wear a suit. Wearing a smart shirt and a smart pair of trousers does not stand in place of wearing a suit. Likewise, choosing a pair of trousers and a jacket that are the same colour but not matching is a bad idea. They will never be exactly the same colour and will therefore stand out very obviously. As a budding young professional I try to limit to what I put on my back shirts that have a collar. Now I work in a fairly casual office, so really dress code is anything goes. However, the one rule I try and keep for no other reason than personal preference is ‘it has to have a collar’—that’s it. That said however, I do love a good, broken in t-shirts. Regardless of how you look at it, t-shirts are the most very basic staple of a man’s wardrobe. As such, I believe they deserve a little respect. Here are a few of my favourite t-shirts that I’ve had on constant rotation

The Eternal Black T-shirt

Most of my t-shirts are black. Black makes me look less fat; it also is the most resistant to looking dirty. As such my most veteran t-shirts are black. My favourite and oldest of the bunch I acquired my first summer back from college. I ended up staying unexpectedly at a girlfriend’s house one night after a wedding and didn’t have anything else to wear. Saving me from the walk of shame my girlfriend-du-jour gave me one of her dad’s t-shirts brought back from holiday in Italy. It features the Puma© puma smoking, and instead of ‘Puma©’ it says ‘Fuma’. It was ancient when it was given to me 8 years ago, but being black it simply gets better with age as it becomes more thread bare and comfy.

The Mortal White T-shirt

While most of my t-shirts are black, my t-shirt of preference is white; I just don’t put them into my rotation as often because they have a life time of about a year before the must be retired. As such, if you are entering into a relationship with a white t-shirt, do so knowing that your pit sweat is going to turn the underarms of your shirt a putrid brown-yellow-green depending on your personal body chemistry. My favourite t-shirt of all-time was a remake of a band t-shirt for Ratt. It featured a rat with electrodes leading from a mixing board to its brain being electrocuted. It was awesome. When I finally retired it with much sadness the whole of the t-shirt was too rancid looking to even wear around the house

Novelty tees

Very rarely will I wear anything that has comprehensible text espousing a message of any sort. I like subtly. As such the oldest t-shirt in my collection I bought from a charity shop when I was 16. It looks like a Spanish football jersey but on closer inspection is actually in support of Gryffindor. The inside of the collar is frayed completely around the inside and might be retired soon. Otherwise I have a penchant for band t-shirts for metal bands.

The retail sector of course is made of a variety of companies from up top-end boutiques through the discount stores: within food retail, Salisbury’s has done well, while the all-time champion, Tesco has missed the boat a bit. The message from this example though is not good for the fashion industry – Tesco’s was focused too heavily on its non-food sector, which is where the biggest losses were incurred, while Salisbury’s was focused on its core market – food. Now conventional wisdom suggests that people are not buying luxuries such as clothing. This is true in part, the reality is people still need to wear clothes or return to Adam and Eve. My feeling is that we shall see some clothes retailers fall while others that adapt to the now entrenched recession, will prosper. It is these questions about these retail companies that you should be asking yourself: do I buy from this store? Look at a few token stores to see if they engage their customer needs well. If they do, then it is these companies that you should be applying for jobs in retail with. Finding retail jobs can be difficult with the bigger operators / high-street companies. don’t be intimidated though. They are employers who are run by people out of your local community. There are retail jobs and there are retail jobs – look carefully and you will find work with the retail company that will keep you employed for years to come as they successfully maneuver through the remainder of the recession. Retail will always exist and that means there will always be retail jobs for employees to choose from. Chin up.

If so, then consider if they are a well run fashion outlet. Do they have too many staff on the floor, are they suitable stocked, overstocked or under stocked? These are all questions you should ask yourself before applying to them a for a job. How well organised is their HR department – how well did they handle your fashion jobs application? When applying for jobs with these companies, don’t be afraid to ask intelligent questions about the state of the business as a whole and the role you are applying for.
